How will my baby be tested?

Blood Specimen
  • Before you leave the hospital, a nurse will take a few drops of blood  from your baby’s heel. infant's foot
  • The hospital will send the blood sample to the newborn screening lab.
  • Arizona collects two samples to ensure no disorders are missed.
  • Call your baby’s doctor about the second sample.

If the results of the Newborn Screening test are unusual, the baby’s doctor is notified immediately, and the doctor may request additional testing.

  • Every baby should be tested before leaving the hospital.

  • Your baby may need to be tested again, if the baby does not pass.

  • The hospital will write results on the back of the immunization record. Bring the immunization record to your baby’s doctor.

If the second test is abnormal, then your baby should be tested again by one month of age and may need more evaluation by an audiologist. The Arizona program will encourage and assist you in getting special services for your baby.
